DoD
At nearly twice the size of the world’s largest corporation (Wal-Mart) logistics is an obvious concern for the $450 billion a year U.S. DoD (Department of Defense). To continue to improve it’s internal logistics operations the DoD is turning to radio frequency identification (RFID) technology.
It is apropos that the genesis of RFID technology can be traced back to an Aerospace and Defense application in World War II. The British put an RFID transmitter on each British plane. When the transmitter (tag) received RF signals from ground radar, it responded with a signal that identified the aircraft as “friend” as opposed to foe.
LANL (Los Alamos National Laboratory) continued to develop the technology and was utilizing the tags to track nuclear material for DoE (Department of Energy) since the 1970’s and although RFID technology has been around for 50 years only now has the United States Department of Defense set a mandate for its implementation.
ARC Advisory Group Analyst Steve Banker states "the bigger problem will be for smaller suppliers." Regarding DoD, he predicts, "they can absolutely make RFID requirements stick for items heading to the battlefield".
DoD is not looking to absolve suppliers of its RFID mandate -- it's "not looking at any measure of leniency," noted Alan Estevez, Assistant Deputy Under Secretary of Defense, Supply Chain Integration. He was also quick to highlight that any exception to the DoD’s RFID mandate will be measured on a "case-by-case" basis and that exemption "is not our intent."
