SAP RFID Event Manager
Implementing an RFID solution will necessarily involve integration with existing IT systems, both yours and your customer’s. We integrate both with custom systems and packaged Enterprise Resource Planning(ERP) systems. Given the impact ERP systems have over the past decade, our interoperability with ERP packages is a key component of our RFID strategies. Within the ERP market SAP has the largest footprint and the most robust back end products for RFID integration. Accordingly our main ERP focus has revolved around SAP.

In January 2004, SAP released technology aimed at helping enterprises utilizing SAP R/3 version 4.6C or higher to allow management and communication of RFID data and automation of RFID-enabled business processes.

A product called ‘Event Manager’ or ‘EM’ is the backbone of SAP’s RFID solution. EM is a backend product that takes real-time input from all points along the supply chain. Using an RFID solution to collect and send supply chain data is the cleanest and most efficient way to send data to EM. Other data collection methods include inputs from outside systems, satellite tracking of large containers, emails, faxes and handheld devices such as scanners.

As data is collected within EM it is placed in the context of business models. The data is evaluated and information alerts are sent to key personnel. For example a customer is sent an email for an impending drop shipment, or an internal employee is notified that a ship carrying product has failed to reach port at the expected time. EM can get the right information to the right person at the right time and RFID is the key to collecting that information.
